Logistics guidance on documentation required to ship or mail materials to international recipients.
- Shipper’s Letter of Instructions (SLI)
- Commercial Invoice
- Campus-specific documentation requirements:
• UCSF: Purchase Order
- Other possible required documents:
• Packing List
• Certificate of Origin
• Dangerous Goods Declaration
• Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
- An Export License may be required for certain commodities and/or destinations
- Information we need:
• Number of pieces
• Weight
• Piece Dimensions (L x W x H)
• For pallets – number of cartons on pallet
• Date/time shipment will be ready
• Pickup address and contact details:
• Is a liftgate required?
• Is an inside pickup required?
• Delivery deadline
• Any dangerous goods? For example:
• Lithium Batteries (large or small, rechargeable or not)
• Acid batteries – including non-spillable batteries
• Flammables
• Corrosives
• Compressed Gases (including compressed air)
- Special considerations
- Will this shipment be returning to the U.S.? A carnet may help smooth the customs process
- High-value shipments may require special authorization for insurance purposes.
