Mission Bay Delivers More Than Expected

Get to know your Mission Bay Logistics team.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) Logistics’ six-person Mission Bay distribution team is responsible for endpoint mail, package, and gas cylinder distribution at UCSF Mission Bay buildings. The Mission Bay footprint entails 1,029 unique packages and mail stops in 37 buildings, with Bayfront Medical Building at 520 Illinois Street being the latest building to open for business—with more on the horizon as UCSF continues to expand. Members of the Mission Bay team log 8k-steps just doing their routes; with thousands of more steps following up with customers and working around street and elevator closures. Let’s get to know them better…

Omar Montalvo, Mail Services Supervisor, leads the Mission Bay team. Omar came to Mission Bay after a handful of internal moves and promotions. Beyond all the institutional knowledge, Omar came ready to learn and ready to create a strong team. Omar isn’t the only new face in Mission Bay, three of his five direct reports are new to SCM. Together, they’ve had to learn the ropes and figure out how to best work together. Now, everyone is familiar enough with the routes and routines that they can cover for one another when a team member is out—an important factor to maintain the flow of work and deliveries.

Omar’s expressed his leadership style as striking a balance between supervising and smothering. He carefully communicates standards, provides clear directions and updates, then lets the team take ownership of their individual duties. Building trust and promoting informed decision making empowers the Mission Bay staff to adjust and improve in small ways, adding up to high-quality service.

Collen Bonifacio, Leon Che, Jason Griffie, Kurt Ison and Erik Mariano are the heart of the Mission Bay team. The team incorporates a lot of personality from passionate sports fandom to acting chops. Above all, they are excellent team players. The team works out of a small, shared space in Genetech Hall. Every morning, the Mission Bay Team huddles to focus and plan their day. Individuals update their status throughout the day, and can ask for and get assistance if or when needed. When everyone meets up at the end of the day, Omar lets the team decompress and relax together—but he’s there if they have questions or need anything. Being approachable and respectful—out on the routes and in the team room—makes it all work.

Mission Bay is on a tear. Whether it’s road and building closures due to a Regents meeting, extra traffic and parking issues during a Warriors game, new routes for a newly opened building, the urgency of a perishable package delivery, or meeting the high bar for gas delivery standards, the Mission Bay team handles it all with ease.

The Mission Bay team embraces new technology. Last year the team successfully implemented photo capture delivery confirmation—learning and adapting to change was a big part of the project. The team quickly got comfortable with the technology and then worked through tricky situations and trouble spots together. Photo capture has contributed to the 99.6% first time successful delivery rate on the 38,000 packages delivered by the team this fiscal year. The project has been a big win for customers, it has even spun off some nice side benefits. Socializing delivery points and promoting the program has increased interaction among customers and Logistics team members. In the coming months, SCM will be implementing XD codes which will allow Mission Bay customers to direct Bear Buy packages from non-preferred vendors through Logistics. That will mean more packages coming through the Mission Bay team and a better delivery experience for Mission Bay customers.

The Mission Bay team exemplifies our PRIDE values, ensuring that mail and Logistics services run smoothly and efficiently. Keep up the great work, team!

The Mission Bay team asked us to give a big shout-out to the drivers from Oyster Point, who make their day—every day.
