Advantages of Purchasing with Certified Small and Diverse Business

Small, local and diverse (SLD) businesses play a significant role in the California economy and the UCSF campus community can benefit from spending with these suppliers.Unfortunately, many businesses continue to face major challenges in being able to be visible and navigate our procurement.

To help reduce barriers in participation, the University of California’s (UC) targeted procurement program features a streamlined purchasing process within a certain dollar threshold when purchasing with SLD businesses. All non-construction UC contracts and procurements that cannot be purchased through an existing strategically source agreement between $10,000 to $250,000 are eligible. The streamlined process involves:

  • Submission of informal quotes
    • One quote for purchases $10,000 up to $100,000
    • Two quotes for procurements of $100,000 up to $250,000
  • Direct quote to award (no request for proposal, no advertising, instant awards, no protests) Use the Explorer Professional Tool to search for qualifying SLD suppliers.

Remember that money spent locally can have a great impact on the community and offers broader societal benefits. The UCSF Anchor Institute Mission reminds the campus that this is our chance to impact our supplier diversity goals while participating in a process that allows you to ease the requisition burden. And, an inclusive procurement strategy widens the pool of suppliers and promotes competition in the supply base, which can improve product quality and drive down costs.
